Bio-luminescence Kayak Tours: During the summer months the water of the Banana River Lagoon comes alive after sunset with Bio-luminescence. A speeding school of mullet swimming under your kayak looks like hundreds of green bottle rockets going off underwater. A manatee or stingray moves much slower underwater, giving a ghostly glow to the illumination. Swirl your kayak paddle or drop your hand into the water to create wild patterns of light. Any movement causes tiny dinoflagellates to emit light. Little is known about these under-appreciated creatures, but they are essential to the existence of most marine life. Tours are 90 minutes and are suitable for beginners. The best time to go is at the darkest hours of the night, five days before or after a new moon, or when the moon is not out at all.
The club has made arrangements for a kayaking expedition on Wednesday, August 19, starting at 9:00 p.m., Cocoa Beach Country Club, 5000 Tom Warriner Blvd, Cocoa Beach FL. The tour will take up to 22 people, which will be split into 2 guided groups. Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes early so we can pay the operator before the tour. Payments are to be in CASH to speed the process along.
There are a limited number of single kayaks so please try to double up if you can. The weight limit for a single kayak is 260 lbs. The double kayak limit is 170 lbs for the front seat and 220 lbs for the rear seat.
Due to the price variation, if you sign up, we expect you are committed to attending. Payment is CASH only and prices listed do not include a tip for the tour guide.
